Here is the editorial they told me they would run in the print version of the March 28th Ashland Daily Press: Vote Joe M Rose for District 12 This year’s county board elections are being held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. District 12, located partly in the Town of Sanborn and partly on Madeline Island, has a unique challenge. We need someone who can represent the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in Sanborn, as well as the summer people and year-round residents of Madeline Island. For the past several years we have not had this kind of representation. This year, we have a wonderful opportunity to bring needed change to our district. Bad River elder and former Northland College Professor Joe M. Rose is running for County Supervisor of District 12. Joe is experienced in both tribal and county government, having served on the Ashland County Board in the 1990s, as well as chairing the zoning committee back then. We on the island have our unique set of challenges, as do our neighbors in Sanborn. Joe M. Rose is the only candidate who can represent all of us on the county level. He has the unique advantage of having roots in both places. Madeline is the sacred center of the Anishinaabeg nation. His great grandfather signed the Treaty of 1854, which took place on the island. In fact, his roots go back much farther than any of us non-natives living here. With the Bad River leaseholds about to expire, Bad River very well could take back management of their land on the end of the island. The Town of La Pointe recognizes and supports Bad River’s sovereignty on the matter. Joe is a perfect balance of smart growth for the economy, and preserving the environment and the special nature of Madeline. Many of us welcome Joe as a man of great integrity, knowledge and follow-through. He has pledged to hold public meetings on important issues, where he will hear our concerns and then represent our voice in Ashland. I am sure he has pledged the same to those in Sanborn. Joe will be attending the March 23rd candidate forum on the island at the Emergency Services Building and is making himself available to islanders via telephone. I urge those of you living in Sanborn and on the island to vote for Joe M. Rose on April 1. Vote for a man of character, knowledge, experience and compassion who will stand up and defend the voice of the people.
