Here is what Railway Minister said on Silchar Lumding BG Project (The Sentinel) NEW DELHI, July 8: Being aware of the fate of pending railway projects in the northeastern States, the Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda accorded maximum priority on implementing the 23 railway projects in the land–locked region. The minister earmarked an outlay of Rs 5,116 crore for Northeast railway project for the fiscal 2014–15, which is a 54 per cent hike over the previous allocations. Eleven of the 23 railway projects underway in the Northeast are national projects. “With higher allocations and close monitoring of works in this region, I hope that Dudhnoi–Mendipathar new line, Lumbding–Badarpur–Silchar gauge conversion, Harmuti–Murkongselek and Balipara–Bhalukpong sections will soon get commissioned,” said Gowda, while presenting the first railway budget of the NDA government. He said that these railway projects would give a boost to the connectivity projects in the region. The Railway Minister also announced the running of Kamakhya–Bengaluru Premium Express, three express trains (Guwahati–Naharlagun Daily Intercity Express), Guwahati–Murkongselek Daily Intercity Express, Kamakhya–Katra Express Weekly via Darbhanga, and Guwahati–Mendipatha Daily Passanger. “I foresee a huge untapped potential in the field of domestic tourism in our country. We plan to take up eco–tourism and education tourism in the northeastern States,” Gowda said. The minister also announced the formation of project coordination and management groups to look after proper and timely implementation of the rail projects. (The Sentinel)
