Here`s an old wooden hand operated washing machine that was in our attic. I dragged it out this morning and found a name tag on it, Wood`s Patent Portable Washing Machine, Patented August 25th, 1857, Mfg. & Sold By Beach(?) & Dickinson, South Amherst, Mass. It`s a lot older than I thought it was, and was made only a couple towns north of here. You put the clothes in the tub, it`s missing the spring that goes in the front to keep pressure on the wooden disc in the tub, and you push & pull the handle to wash! Probably a little better than a wash board, but not by much!
