Here we go again, another year, and another Edinburgh Festival - TopicsExpress

Here we go again, another year, and another Edinburgh Festival Fringe gets underway. I’m back from my first full day of preview shows (I’m not sure of Bob Slayer’s Heroes of the Fringe launch can be described as anything other than wonderfully shambolic on Tuesday night, but it’s rapidly becoming the overture to a month of comedy, theater, music, and everything in-between. In theory I could have taken in seven previews today, generally thirty minutes of a free bar and an hour to two hours of five-minute sets from the venue’s shows. In fact I took in just four – and having watched Richard Stamp attempt all seven and be left with a rather frazzled twitter stream, I think I made the right choice. It’s always interesting to see who the venues pick for these occasions – and if you want an early steer as the acts the venues think are going to be big and marketable, generally they’re in the previews. Naturally not everything is to my taste, but from today’s viewing I’ve put a little must see star next to Al Lubel, Romesh Ranganathan, Drum Struck, Michael Che, and Melmoth the Wanderer. Thank you also to everyone who asked on Twitter, Facebook, and via email, about the plans for this year’s podcast. The short answer is that it’s going ahead, and the first regular episode will be posted on Monday 5th August. Yes, that’s a little later than normal, but there are a few changes to the format… and I’ll explain them all tomorrow in a small preview podcast.
