Here we go..heres our first in our new Photo Critique series. Traci Peterson sent in some photos for critique and I recorded a quick video critique for her. After that, she photographed a friends wedding and sent some of those photos in for my critique. I am sharing one of them with you (with her permission). The first color photo is the original image. The next one is after she cropped it and used Lightroom to convert it to black and white and lighten it. I love the emotion of this image. Converting it to BW really draws you into the subjects faces. The 3rd photo is just a little change that I made in which I used Photoshop to lighten the faces. Having windows as well as strong back light coming in can be a challenge. A camera set to on automatic will expose for the background and the faces will be dark. Using a flash would lighten everything, but it would take away from the mood and would reflect in the glass. A reflector placed opposite the window would lighten everything and help. The nice think about a reflector as opposed to a flash is that you can immediately see the results. Moving the reflector around will allow you to see how the light is falling. Placing the camera on manual puts you in control instead of the camera making the decision. You can control the lightness/darkness of your background by adjusting your shutter speed. Be sure to list your questions and comments below. Great job Traci! You have a great eye for composition and your continual pursuit of asking for critique and applying it is going to take you far!
