Heres a different kind of monster for Monster Monday. Ive posted this before, but couldnt resist todays theme. A super rare Mississippian Walls Engraved Janus Monster Face waterbottle (1200-1600 AD). It was found on the Berry Site in Pemiscot Co, MO by Leroy Richardson. It is Ex. Elsie Hapeman collection and was pictured in Roy Hathcock’s “Ancient Indian Pottery of the Mississippi River Valley” p. 65, #145. There are very few authentic examples of these vessels. They are thought to depict the faces of cat serpents, otherwise known as underwater panther deities. A Janus bottle is one that has two identical faces on either side of the vessel, in this case, connected by the whiskers. The spiral lines coming down under the mouth are known as speech symbols and are meant to indicate that the cat is roaring or growling. It also has the weeping eye motif as well as a stair-step engraved neck.
