Heres a great story! The date is wrong, but I just got it. The story of the fastest plane ever, the X-15. The X-15 has a personal touch for me, too. One spring day in about 1961 or so, maybe a bit earlier, my then-best friend David Downer & I went to visit Edwards with my parents in our 1950 Ford or 1950 Cadillac, I dont remember which. The Ford was the only car my Dad ever bought new, and the Cadillac I actually street raced once on the North side of the Huntington Library in San Marino - racing Roger Dames in his 1957 Plymouth and beat him... just barely! Anyway, we got the tour at Edwards where - back then - there was virtually no security, you just drove onto the base. We asked about seeing the X-15, and the officer on duty told us that it was too bad we had come that particular day, as it was off at the rocket test area doing an engine test.
