BERINATO - Waltham Native July 12, 1916 - January 24, 2014 After the outbreak of World War II Frank was assigned to the 104th Infantry Regiment of the famed Yankee Division; the 26th Infantry Division that traces its Massachusetts roots to Colonial times. Assigned to General George S. Pattons 3rd Army Franks unit saw heavy fighting in Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes; home to the infamous Battle of the Bulge. --------------------------------- Robert H. Bolio - Waltham Native From Obituary: Robert H. Bolio, 91, of St. Petersburg, passed away July 23, 2014. Born in Waltham, MA. He was a WWII veteran who served in the Battle of the Bulge ------------------------------ FELIX A. PHIL CARDARELLI - Waltham Resident During World War II he served with the U.S. Army’s 293rd Engineer Combat Battalion, arriving in Europe just in time for his unit to be caught up in the infamous ‘Battle of the Bulge’ during the winter of 1944-45. January 1, 1923 - September 17, 2010 ------------------------------------- ANTHONY CARDILLO - Ran a business in Waltham 1925 - September 7, 2013 At the start of World War II, he worked at the Boston Naval Shipyard where he learned to weld – a skill he would later use to grow a successful business. Eager to help his country, Red convinced his mother to give him permission to enlist in the armed forces, despite the fact that he was underage. He was soon deployed and fought valiantly in the Battle of the Bulge. ------------------------------------------ JOSEPH A. LENZA - Waltham Native During World War II he served with the 150th Combat Engineer Battalion with Pattons Third Army. He fought during the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in December, 1944. He also earned five battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation March 2, 1924 - October 13, 2004 ----------------------------------------- DONALD A. MICKLAY - Waltham Resident Joined the United States Army and was assigned to the 26th Infantry Division March 5, 1924 - December 24, 2012 Shortly after Dons arrival in Europe in late June, 1944 his unit was part of the Allied push from the French coast toward Germany. He took part in the battles of the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. It was during the Ardennes campaign, during December and January of 1944-45 and more infamously referred to as the Battle of the Bulge, that Dons Yankee Division was attached to General George S. Pattons Third Army. Pattons pivotal thrust to relieve the 101st Airborne Division, who stubbornly held the city of Bastogne, denied the Germans any hope of pushing the Allies back toward the coast and prolonging an end to the war. ---------------------------------------------- JOHN E. OKANE - Waltham Resident July 3, 1923 - September 22, 2014 During World War II he served with the United States Army as part of the 3rd Military Government Regiment. His unit landed in Normandy a day after the invasion of Europe and saw action in Northern France, the Rhineland and during the infamous Ardennes Campaign, better known as the Battle of the Bulge during the hard winter of 1944/45. Discharged from the service just after Christmas, 1945 he came home to Dorchester and in the spring of 1946 resurrected his baseball skills and began playing professional baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in the Florida State League. ------------------------------------------ GEORGE J. RENNA - Waltham Resident One of four brothers who served in the military during World War II. June 3, 1916 - September 30, 2011 He joined the United States Army in 1943 and arrived in Normandy days after the initial invasion of Europe in June, 1944. He was a member of 33rd Armored Regiment that participated in the battles of Northern France, the Rhineland and the Ardennes, better known as the Battle of the Bulge during the winter of 1944/45. His unit arrived in Central Europe in the spring of 1945. ------------------------------------------------ ERNEST T. TAILLACQ - Waltham Resident During World War II he served with the U.S. Army’s 1st Division, the ‘Big Red One’. April 16, 1922 - March 22, 2004 He saw action in several campaigns beginning with the North African Campaign in Morocco, Algiers and Tunisia; the invasion of Sicily, the D-Day landing on June 6, 1944 at Omaha Beach and the following battle for Normandy, the Northern France Campaign, the Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes Campaign in Belgium, the Rhineland, the Germany Campaign and the Central Europe Campaign encompassing Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for bravery, the Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Silver Service Star with Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, Honorable Service Pin, Marksman Badge, Overseas Ribbon, Belgian Fourragere, Army Occupation Medal with German Clasp and the Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal.
