Heres a little thing that often happens at gigs -- people talking, and more to the point too much Loud Talking … So, what to we do about it? So. What To Do? Involve The Audience. Keep their attention with the musics intensity, beauty, lyrics and so forth. Dont dither between numbers. Dont mumble and waffle for ages about a song -- keep it short and entertaining. People want music, not a music-lesson!* And keep the interval *short*, or youll lose the gigs vibe … the natives tend to get restless and will have started some juicy gossip or conversational thread that wants to last, just as youre starting again… Turn Up. Seems a great idea. Sadly, this often does not work, because people just talk louder -- theyre *in* conversations, and dont consciously notice that the music gets louder. Plus, as it gets louder, the sound often goes off; it gets too loud for the venue, resulting in harsh EQs … and feedback in the worst cases. Turn Down. This seems counter-intuitive, but a sudden reduction in volume (monitors too, in extremes) shocks everyone into shutting up. Then fade in the volume to a lower level. People get the hint, and keep quieter. Not ideal, perhaps, but it works wonders. In some cases, nothing at all can be done. Just never go back, as the gig is hopeless: The venue is one of those that just bungs music into a popular bar where people come to to drink and make merry. The music is just audio wallpaper. Doing the soul destroying job of providing ambience is of our remit here. I have other tricks, but Im keeping mum … :) . . *Extreme folky scenarios are the exception, Ive noticed. If in doubt, ask the promoter.
