Heres a long and drawn out question for my friends in government: One government organization pays $5000 for a truck tire to be delivered to their facility through a contractor. Another nearby government organization calls the manufacturer of that truck tire and has the same brand and model of truck tire delivered to their facility for only $1200. In the end, the exact same service was rendered, but the first government organization paid more than four times as much for the same car tire. One other thing to mention is that the contractor didnt go buy or deliver the tire themselves, they contracted another company which in turn contracted the manufacturer who did all of the work in providing the tire and delivering it. So there are two additional companies involved in the transaction, when the first governmental organization could have just done what the second one did and ordered the truck tire right from the manufacturer. Another small wrinkle to this story: The first contractor donates $500 to a political campaign benefiting the person who runs the first governmental organization. So heres the question: Is what the first governmental organization did legal? Ethical? Just fine but not a good use of tax dollars? Im not in government, so I dont understand the legal technicalities of how transactions like this work, but Im having a hard time with this as a taxpayer. Any input would be appreciated.
