Heres a nice tree for your Tuesday! We thank our contributor Samuel for sharing a pic of this fine Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) that he found in autumn 2013 along the Grand River in Cambridge. He estimated its circumference at 18-20 ft (~ 5.5 - 6 metres). Bur Oak is a common sight throughout the southern part of Ontario, typically occurring on rich plains. While it can sometimes be found in closed forest stands (where it grows a long, clear trunk), in Ontario it is typically a stout tree of open or disturbed environments where its leafy crown receives plenty of light in perpetuity. Often it is found in fencerows or pastures in farm country. Although Samuels tree is now being enclosed by smaller trees, its huge girth and low branches tell us that it grew up in the open. This one is definitely among the more impressive!
