Heres a preview of one of the pieces Ill be playing TOMORROW NIGHT at my show, 7pm at the Ukrainian Institute of America: This is my interpretation of Chopins Heroic Polonaise in A-flat Major. There were a lot of great composers between 1800-1900, but the greatest composer for the piano in that period - in terms of huge sounds, chromaticism, whacky modulations, tension and out-of-the-box drama - was Chopin. I like that there are several contrasting sections in his piece, and I have a lot of fun in the middle where it camps out on a rhythmic E-major vamp that builds drama for a long time. I decided to explore and change this section a lot - I start with a right-hand reduction, then some a la Stravinsky at his most placid, then a right and left role reversal, then finally some odd-meters with the same original melodies.
