I think its their response to the artists interest in them that makes it so rich. Perception of beauty is pretty universal - even very young babies respond to certain proportions and features, regardless of race. I think you can be quite ugly and symmetrical. Features that attract are vaguely neonate - large eyes fairly low in the head, small chin, wider cheeks etc. *Its interesting that so many of these expressions are pensive rather than cheerful, private rather than public. Is that what makes them so fascinating? Diana McLellan: No. I think its the fact that theyre responding to the gaze of the artist.
