Heres a thing on the whole media are blowing ebola out of proportion comments which were inevitable. You know whos actually at fault? You. Yes, you with the mouse and the remote. Youre at fault. The media in general doesnt want to frighten people needlessly. What they do want is higher viewer numbers, higher web traffic, higher newspaper sales. So when they post stories about ebola and see HUGE spikes in those numbers (Ive seen it, other editors have seen it, its there) that shows us theres a desire for more information, and we fill that need by doing more stories. There are obvious flaws with that. The 1 person who doesnt want what the 10,000 other clickers wanted will think were blowing this out of proportion. The people in charge of driving those numbers even higher can shoot past reasonable and into unreasonable territory pretty quickly, and one over-the-top place makes the rest of us look bad. You want to fix it? Break the ad revenue model which pays us and revolves around higher viewer/site numbers so we can eat and not be homeless. Fund public media and vote for people who support it, rather than try to defund it just to score a few political points (and I will kick those people in the nuts with steel-toed boots if I ever meet them). Give some money to a Patreon for an actual good and responsible site, not just one you agree with. A lack of information creates fear, not an abundance of information. If you actually READ all the articles and reports were doing, youd feel better. So thats on you too. Im doing my job just fine. Its time for you to do yours.
