Heres a true story of courage and determination that brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye. What an amazing little girl! Its appalling to think that this level of bigotry among what would otherwise be regarded as average, law-abiding members of society still existed in America as late as 1960. On the other hand, its heartening to realise how far weve come, on a purely domestic level, in the past 50-odd years. Of course, there is still *far* too much racism and hatred in the world, as evidenced by the recent horrific beheadings in the Middle East, but the level of intolerance recounted here has now thankfully been pushed largely to the fringes of society and is frowned upon and deemed unacceptable by the average person these days. Its important that we dont lose sight of that.
