Heres a video of Uphoria! 2014, an event organised by Made Real (fb/ProjMadeReal). Made Real aims to empower youth with a more positive self-image through nutrition, self-love, and fitness. We catch up with Roslyn Teng, Class of 18, who is a co-founder of this organisation. Tell us about yourself! “I love challenges and a good laugh! I live a caffeine-fueled life and enjoy abusing my youthful energy on equal parts work and play. My primary academic interests lie in psychology and philosophy, although I find it rewarding to learn broadly and cross-pollinate ideas from disparate disciplines.” What have you been up to this summer? “The long break has been nothing short of fulfilling. I spend most of my time building a community, Made Real, which aims to empower youth with a more positive self- and body-image through health and fitness. While chatting about our personal experiences, a close friend and I identified a gap in social support for those with a destructive self- and body-image - which tends to be closely related to eating disorders and obesity. We thus set up Made Real to inspire recovery from such extremes, and to encourage physical and mental wellness for youths in general. In May, we organised our first large-scale event at *SCAPE. Currently, we are planning for our booth at RunNUS on 24 August, and another large-scale event come mid-September. Aside from Made Real, I am involved in Youth for Ecologys SG360, a roaming exhibition that is having multiple runs later this year. The visual educational exhibition aims to communicate the key ideas of a paper released by EcoYouth in light of the 2013 Population White Paper and Land Use Plan. The exhibition also talks about local environmental issues to a broader audience in a more engaging rather than academic manner. As part-time jobs, I am currently tutoring two kids, and had my taste of F&B by working in a cafe (Necessary Provisions, yay!) from about November last year to June this year. Besides the serious stuff, I make sure to indulge in my favourite past times like chilling with friends at cafes and bars, discovering yummy vegetarian food, trawling museums and art galleries, and going to the gym. I also love discovering the culture and vibes of other countries, and visited Western Bhutan and Istanbul, Turkey for the first time in June.” 3. You must be excited, college life starts in less than a month for you! Is there anything in particular that youre looking forward to in Yale-NUS? “I am looking forward to making friends and bonding with so many new people. To me, learning and meaningful work is a never-ending source of joy. I am excited to explore my academic interests while finding the precarious balance between work, play, and sleep.” You can follow Made Real on Twitter/Instagram at @ProjMadeReal or visit their website (projectmadereal.wordpress).
