Heres an exquisite depiction of very traditional Ashtanga yoga in Mysore, India. This 13 min video has three parts: (1) cuts of the led Primary Series (what I practice) (2) cuts of the led Second Series (3) the Mysore-style open floor (non-led, self-practice). The Mysore style of teaching yoga is indeed named after the place :-) This style of teaching allows students to learn gradually, at a rate uniquely appropriate for them, as guided by a teacher. After students learn the practice, then a led class becomes possible and safe -- but most of the learning takes place individually, with daily self-practice, with guidance from a teacher. I fall in love with this style repeatedly, question it often, stray often, experiment elsewhere often, and am always ultimately amazed by its ability to transform -- physically and otherwise. Recently I rekindled my commitment to it. For the last five days, Ive gotten up 75 min earlier than usual to practice the classical Primary Series before anything else happens in my day. Im amazed by the positive effects of this action on my life -- positive effects from the poses themselves, from the pacing, from the time of day, from the sunrise, from the commitment to a practice, from the effort it all takes, from knowing that Im doing this only because I believe in it, I believe in this practice, done this way. Each time I do it, Im casting a vote in its favor. https://youtube/watch?v=sAkcFuXAmXA
