Heres an interesting article from rawstory that analyzes which states have the highest prison populations. You will notice that the number of prisoners does not correlate with the total population of the state as a whole. Instead, the number of prisoners correlates with geography and political ideology, i.e. southern conservative states are likely to have a higher prisoner population than liberal states on either coasts. When you consider that the United States has 25 percent of the worlds prison population and that the cost of keeping people imprisoned runs in the hundreds of thousands, one must question the logic of our criminal justice system.
