Heres an interesting observation. Usually, the exercises that create the most muscle soreness are dynamic movements that require high activation under stretch (high eccentric muscle forces at long muscle lengths). However, anecdotally, the ab wheel rollout creates the most soreness in the abdominals, and its an isometric exercise for the rectus abdominis (at least its supposed to be - some lifters screw it up by allowing their lumbar spines to hyperextend). Same goes for the deadlift in the case of the lumbar erector spinae. Dont underestimate isometric core stability exercises, they are highly effective!
