Heres my little place in Kalalau from 1974. No, I didnt cut any bamboo, it all came from Bamboo Bills A-Frame in the bamboo forest. His place got to be too well known, and he didnt want anyone else there. So I took it apart, and carted the bamboo further up Valley. The spot was no more than 150 ft off the main trail on one of the old terraces. A rock about the size of a car was chosen to be the main part. It had upper & lower bunks with air mattresses, hammock, stove made out of a rectangular cashew nut can, grill & Coleman stove all surrounded and made up of nearby rocks. 6 mil Poly was used for the roof & sides, camo painted, & covered with branches. When it was done, all mosquito netted in, it was VERY comfy. Kalalau can be a nasty place to be in the rain, but I was snug as a bug in a rug. I slept mainly in the hammock, my Coleman would be pumped up the night before, so I could make my morning coffee without leaving the hammock.Pics: Getting started; Brother Joe making sure it was up to code; looking up to top bunk: Hammock time; layout. Wed gather just-ripe pineapples from the abandoned fields at Anahola, and Bamboo Bill made pineapple upside down cake! Talk about kicked back! That was the whole idea!!
