Heres some more Chronicles archive posting; this is from our early months in 2011. Its another example of the baffling (for me!) guitar knowledge that my old buddy BiG D brought to this page. When he posted on guitarists, as a guitarist himself he didnt just post the video and comment on the music: he gave some technical info on technique and the importance of that particular player. This is another case in point: Big Ds tribute to the innovation of Van Halen: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It was the late 70s and unless you lived through it, it may be kind of hard to understand. Disco ruled the radio, you couldnt turn the dial without finding the latest and greatest by the Bee Gees or The Village People. The term Rock was now assigned to bands like Styx or Supertramp. The guitar driven rock of Led Zep, Deep Purple etc were pushed to the back-burner of the music scene. Then out of nowhere Van Halen burst onto the scene. With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. This is Eruption, this track Single-handedly changed the face of the electric guitar forever.
