Heres something different. Today, Extra Credits and the IdeaChannel did a pair of videos about video game mechanics and how they translate to a storytelling medium. There are some really interesting discussions about the shared narrative, how we learn the mechanics, and what happens as we get better at manipulating those mechanics. While the discussion is obviously about video games, board games and card games do get brought up. This led me to think about Netrunner. When I tell stories of the game, it usually revolves around the high points of tension or drama, like when I am bluffing my ass off. Further, my method of learning the mechanics has colored my approach. Like I will prefer bluffs all day any day, and that makes me more likely to run into traps because I am expecting my opponent to be bluffing. At the same time, I tend to hit R&D hard enough with gabe to virtually lock it down without any interfaces. Thus I conversely do tricks to keep a runner from pulling the same against me. As Ive gotten better at the game, I see my evaluation of cards and mechanics shifting. Tags and Bad Publicity are not things to fear, for instance. And thus my narratives change. So TLDR version & question: How do the mechanics of Netrunner change your experience with the game? What do the mechanics mean for you? What story does the game tell, either in art, text, or play?
