Heres something for the music dorks. Actually knowing who the Cowsills are/were pretty much exposes that youre of at least a certain age. For you youngins, the tv show the Partridge Family was modeled on the Cowsills. They were a rock band that included their mom and virtually all the siblings. Unlike made-for-tv bands like the Monkees, the Cowsills really sang and really played their instruments. In terms of record sales and that kind of thing, they predate the Jackson 5 and before the Osmond Brothers (who didnt really take off until Donny joined). Their mom had some serious musical dna in her genes, which she passed along to the kids. Many of them were naturally gifted musicians. They became accomplished musicians pretty quickly. I had assumed that the Cowsills vanished from the scene by virtue of being uncool. Unfortunately the real story isnt that simple. Their father Bud was every bit the ruthless megalomaniac as Joe Jackson, but lacked both the business sense and the musical knowledge that Jackson had. Bud Cowsills intense drive helped push the Cowsills success, but he also destroyed it. As a result, some of the story is sad and some of the story is cool. Its has all the complexities you get when documenting real people. For those of us of a certain age, this is well worth watching. It was a blast from the past. There are clips from their tv appearances, which Id never seen in color.
