Heres something that you may not be aware of, but might need to - TopicsExpress

Heres something that you may not be aware of, but might need to know, in case you pick up animals & want to help. 1) PLEASE do not pick up pups if the mother dog is around. If they are relatively safe, not in immediate danger of getting run over by traffic, etc, then feed them, deworm & vaccinate them all & have the mother sterilized in due time. 2) Puppies can be dewormed once they are 30 days or so. Vaccinations to be done after they are 45 days of age. PLEASE check the vaccination stickers & dates and maintain records, so they can be handed over to adopters. 3) Kittens can be vaccinated only when they reach three months of age & not before. However, please get them dewormed too. 4) If you are looking after community dogs in your area, BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM. Have them vaccinated annually and PLEASE have them sterilized. 5) Spay/neuter animals before they come on heat even once. They can be safely sterilized once they are around 7 to 8 months of age. Its better to get the sterilization done before the very first heat for various health benefits (please google & check) 6) If you see a dog thats not doing too well on the street, due to mange or old age or general weakness, try managing the situation as best as you can, while keeping them comfortable. Sometimes, basic medication & good food will work wonders. ONLY if this does not work, try other alternatives or removing them from the area. 7) If you see an animal in distress, try and take the animal to the nearest Vet hospital or shelter for treatment yourself. If you dont have a car, no worries; TAKE AN AUTO! Try not to wait for someone to come do it for you. 8) And lastly, a shelter is always the last resort. They are always full of animals in need of most help, very less space, short-staffed and sometimes, infections cannot be controlled, as much as they would like to. So do not assume all animals you see can go off happily into the sunset & live out jolly good lives at shelters.
