Heres the latest! Longer than usual. Cos we have lots to celebrate! May 3 Grand Re-opening of Wildcat Bluff Nature Center Well, since it’s us, it’s going to be a little less “Grand” and a little more down-home casual. Heck, we could even call it more of a Potluck party! We just wanted to let you know, we really are back, and you are so welcome to come out and visit us. We are creating new trails and repairing existing ones, and we’ve cleaned up a whole lot, both inside and outside the Visitor Center and Gilvin Natural Science Center. Artist in residence, Patsy Kizor, assisted by a team of volunteers have painted a gorgeous mural on the floor of the Gilvin Building depicting the Tree of Life, and over thirty examples of local fauna and flora. It’s gorgeous, and educational. Kind of like us, isn’t it? We’ve also done tons of work on Libb’s trail, got our well water back online and the stream/pond running again, providing a welcome source of water for local animals like deer, raccoons, bobcats, etc. We are getting busy leading programs and hikes for school groups, and are reestablishing our relationships with AISD, Window on a Wider World, the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains, the Boy Scouts of America, Golden Spread Council, the Boys and Girls Club of Amarillo, and more besides. And, Summer Camps! We will have four Summer Camps in July: Animals A-Z, Nature Arts and Crafts, Animals of the High Plains, Insects and their Relatives. ( Details on events page of our website: wildcatbluff.org/event/month/2014-07 We’ve had Birthday parties, family gatherings and most important of all, we’ve had between 60 and 70 people volunteering over 1200 hours of time and talent, just since the beginning of the year, to bring this place back to life. None of what is now happening here would be possible without them. And it’s SPRING. What could be a better way to celebrate the new season than by welcoming all to come visit us? Who knows, if we get a little bit more rain, we might see an explosion of wildflowers! Here’s our rough idea of a schedule for the day’s activities from 9:00 to 2:00 on Saturday May 3rd. Come join us. It’s our gift to you, though (of course) donations are always welcome! 9:00 - Guided hike with Board Member and resident Naturalist: Wes Phillips and/or Board Chair, Mary Emeny 9:00 - Breaking in the New Runner’s Trail. Open to all runners. 10:00 – 10:30 Eggsperiments – Eggsecutive Director, Vivien Young – Gilvin Natural Science Building 10:30 – 11:30 - Snakes Alive!! With local herpetologist, Paul White, introduced and assisted by Board Member, Alessandra DiTommaso - Gilvin Natural Science Building and thereabouts Kids’ activities, some using the new animal floor painting by artist, Patsy Kizor. LUNCH: 12:00 – 1:00 Eat-a Bug! Wes Phillips and Board Chair, Mary Emeny – Not only Bug Tortillas, but also more traditional food… 12:00 – 1:00 - Music by Rick Todd and Those Guys 12:30 - 1:30 - Sunflower planting and painting: the Horse Trough behind Visitor Center, with Board Member, Tiffany Lamb Quanah Parker Trail Arrow Marker dedication 1:30 – 2:00 THROUGHOUT: Shawn Martin: Entertainer extraordinaire, wandering throughout the day, doing fun science-y stuff with kids. Art sale in the Visitor Center: Framed and unframed photographs by Louise Daniel Membership and Summer Camp signups Membership Drawing – 5 family memberships drawn from attendees.
