Heres the latest from the Adam Gray campaign ‘Sacramento made me do it!’ Declaring that unidentified “Sacramento folks” made him do it, perennial candidate Jack Mobley filed as a write-in candidate in the upcoming June 3 primary in the 21st Assembly District. This action takes advantage of a loophole in state law that requires the November ballot consist of the top two vote getters from the primary election. In this case, that will be Adam Gray, whose name is printed on the ballot because he submitted thousands of signatures from voters in the district, and Mobley, if he gets a single write-in vote in the June primary. By not filing for office in the traditional manner, Mobley avoided paying a filing fee, or the task of collecting thousands of signatures to get on the ballot without a filing fee. “Assembly Republican party leaders from Sacramento were desperate to find a candidate to run against Gray, but failed to persuade anyone to take out the papers, collect the signatures or pay the fee by the March 7th deadline. So they decided to back door the process and get their candidate on the ballot this way,” said Mike Lynch, Gray’s campaign manager. Lynch explained, “Mobley has every right to run for this office in this manner, but it is disingenuous to suggest his candidacy is inspired by anything other than a directive from partisan political forces in Sacramento. In terms of motivation for his candidacy, Mobley came closest to the truth when he told the Merced Sun Star reporter that ‘Quite frankly, I was not going to run but the folks in Sacramento have been trying to get me to change my mind.’ (Merced Sun Star May 21, 2014) Lynch pointed out that Mobley’s action to take advantage of a legal loophole is fully in keeping with the “business as usual” special interest politics of Sacramento. “This is the same approach that has brought us gridlock, partisan bickering and has frustrated Californians. Gray’s first term has been marked by problem solving, cross party cooperation and a devotion to his district above partisanship,” concluded Lynch.
