Climate Reality Project presenter Bill Brown discusses the local, state, and federal shifts that need to take place to halt global warming and meet the challenges of climate change. This is the Big Picture lecture … well name the names, state the facts, and outline the major changes we need to implement in an exact timeframe. Tue, April 29 Green Chamber: the courage to confront climate change & the Mora County Fracking Ban 5:30-7pm Mural Room, Old Taos County Courthouse, 104 North Plaza. The Taos Green Chamber of Commerce hosts a discussion of the realities of climate change on our local economy. In collaboration with the Global Climate Convergence, this month’s regular gathering will feature County Commissioner John Olivas and Kathleen Dudley with the Mew Mexico Coalition for Community Rights, speaking about the Mora County ban on fracking, and potential applications of the Community Rights Ordinance here in Taos. With high voltage transmission lines looming, rumors of water transfers to the oil and gas industry circulating, and climate change scheduled to eliminate all the trees in our national forest in 17-50 years, Mora County offers some hard-won lessons to us about sustainability and protecting our natural resources. Wed, April 30, REAP Grants Small Business Solar and Renewable Energy 1:30pm, Taos County Administration building. Applications are being taken for rural small business and agricultural producers for the 2014 Renewable Energy for America Program, (REAP) offered by USDA-Rural Development. Rural Development staff will make a presentation on the program on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 beginning at 1:30 in the Taos County Administration building, Commission Chambers, 105 Albright Street in Taos. The REAP program supports projects like wind, photovoltaic (solar electric) installations, solar thermal (heating) installations; energy efficiency improvements like insulation, upgrades to windows, caulking, higher efficiency mechanical systems and lighting alternatives. Biomass and geothermal projects are also supported. Funding for feasibility studies for renewable energy projects can also be awarded.
