Heres todays excerpt. He couldn’t imagine what was out there. He’d heard rumors of cougars now and again but had never actually put his dogs on a track. Maybe some ornery male bear had emerged from its den early and was drawn to the kill site. Harold and Ern unsheathed shotguns, shoving the magazines full of shells hastily, dropping some in the snow, and Gary strapped on the holster of the .45 he had bought just for this kind of hunting. It had a red dot scope and a laser sight so that he could see he was shooting the game and not one of his own dogs. He had just finished strapping on the pistol when a deep, low howl emanated from the swamp. Gary’s face blanched and he felt suddenly cold. He turned and ran through the snow as fast as his legs and tar-filled lungs would take him. He ran headlong into the swamp. It was three hundred yards to the scene of the fight through the corn snow and thick brush. Gary arrived out of breath, sweat pouring from his brow. Blood was everywhere.
