Heres what I watched on the flight: Nightmare Before Christmas - TopicsExpress

Heres what I watched on the flight: Nightmare Before Christmas - I saw it once before, long time ago. While I didnt remember much of it, I think I had largely the same impression this time. Its really a musical version of a Burton-esque Fable, which is kind of the thing he was doing early in his career (see: Edward Scissorhands). The problem is that the music kind of dictates everything about the story, so that there are really no characters. And of course, the style overwhelms everything, but its visually brilliant. A joy to watch, despite having no emotional connection. Amazing Spider-man 2: Yeah, I knew it was going to be awful, which is why I avoided it when it came out, but I was still intrigued to know just HOW AWFUL. And to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised by the ways in which it was awful. I mean, its awful on a completely new and unique level. It was kind of enjoyable to be surprised at how vast and profound the problems were. Ive really never seen any film (or work in progress) like it. Wanda Sykes: Ima Be Me - god, I had no idea how much I missed her humor. I dont even remember where Id seen her on TV a decade ago. I know she was a regular guest on Curb Your Enthusiasm, but Id watched that later, and I never saw the Wanda Sykes show. Maybe Id caught a lot of her earlier Comedy Central appearances. In any case, the first half of this special is just home run after home run. The second half is more fat jokes and age jokes, which . . . eh. But the first half, about political and race stuff, is absolutely worth watching. Tracy Morgan: Bona Fide - not quite as good as Wanda, but most of Tracys appeal and humor is just his delivery of . . . everything. Amusing, but I did lose interest halfway through. Billy Crystal: 700 Sundays - Ive never really been a huge fan, but I was really curious, as hes a classic comedian, and Ive really seen none of his standup. This is pretty much an autobiographical standup routine, and it was so good that Im going to order it for my parents. Hilarious, poignant, and just beautifully told. If youve ever remotely been a fan of anything BC has done, you must see this.
