Here’s my take on those maniacs who massacred 100+ schoolkids in Pakistan the other day. In their own words, they claim to have done it because it was a school for children of military officers, and the military was being mean and attacking them. Now I can see how people might have political/religious/philosophical differences, and I get the idea that if you are being attacked you have some right to defend yourself. But here’s the thing Taliban-people... you have a disagreement with the military, not the children. Attacking kids to ‘get revenge’ at their parents tells me that you are weak cowards. It says that you don’t have the stones to stand toe-to-toe with a real fighter, so instead you go after the weak and defenseless. It’s the equivalent of getting bullied on the playground and then going home and kicking your dog. It isn’t evidence that you are ‘tough’ or ‘strong.’ In fact, it’s the exact opposite. It shows that you are cowards and losers. If the best you can do is kill a bunch of defenseless kids, then it is obvious that you are such crappy soldiers that you can’t actually fight a real army, and that makes you pretty feeble. On a similar note, I feel the same about the Bush administration’s torture and the pathetic torture apologists. The US has, by far, the biggest, baddest military on the planet, and the strongest intelligence network that’s ever been. We are opposing a few hundred uneducated, superstitious rubes that literally live in mud huts. For us to say that we have to resort to violating all of our moral principles and commit torture in order to protect us from the “scary brown people” just sounds completely pathetic. Torturing people doesn’t make you tough and strong. It makes you look like you are weak and scared and pitiful. The US is better than that. The US is stronger than that. We can win this ‘war’ militarily, politically, philosophical, and culturally without resorting to uncivilized and disgusting behavior. No matter what that sniveling little coward Dick Cheney says.
