Herodutus (history) ROOTS OF ISLAMIC POETRY Poetry flourished in the Near East before the birth of Islam in the 7th century. In the northern portion of the Indian subcontinent, Sanskrit literature thrived. Poets of the Sasanian and Byzantine Empires wrote lyrics on both secular and religious themes. In nomadic, tribal cultures, however—among the Bedouins of the Arabian Peninsula and Turkic peoples in the Caucasus and Central Asia—poetry was oral, preserved by memorization. Some of the written works from this early period are still read and performed and a number of the oral poetic traditions of the pre-Islamic era are still practiced.
