Herschel, our sweet Golden Basset, our grand old dude, went to the bridge today. He came to Belly Rubs 11 months ago, starved, with nails so long he could barely walk. He wasnt even able to scratch. His devoted foster mom, Janet Winn, took him to see the vet. He was so frail and sick he couldnt withstand vaccinations or a heartworm test. The doctor told her just to take him home. He said he may not survive another day. He had a severe cough, lumps, extreme arthritis, bad teeth, and multiple infections. He had horribly calloused elbows from laying on some hard surface his entire life. Janet spent weeks giving him antibiotics, mucinex, vitamins, and finally, a different dog began to emerge. Herschel got well. His cough went away and his coat filled out and became shiny and thick. She actually saw him run in the yard. He LOVED the other dogs in his foster home. He LOVED his foster mom. He knew where she kept the treats and he loved to eat. He had a wonderful life this past year. The only shame is that more people didnt get to see how much he gave in return for the kindness he was shown. We dont know where he came from or what he endured before but I wish we had known him longer. His foster mom says he was the nicest boy and loved every person and every animal he met. RIP Herschel. You will be missed.
