Hey, Arcadians! Its Thursday again and that means another Throwback Anime! Blue Seed Original manga run: March 1992 - June 1996 Original anime run: October 5, 1994 - March 29, 1995 Genre: Action, Horror Plot: Momiji Fujimiya is a high school student who soon discovers shes the descendant of Princess Kushinada, a powerful priestess who lived long ago tasked to destroy the Aragami and Orochi, powerful plant monsters. The Aragami have returned to Tokyo under Orochi looking to destroy humanity, now Momiji with the help of Mamoru Kusanagi, a man imbued with magatama beads, or blue seeds, and a government force directed to destroy the Aragami, must face Orochi and destroy him before its too late. I really enjoy this anime, a lot! I remember watching when I was about 6 or 8 years old and it just stuck with me. It has a lot of action scenes and a lot of people being squashed by giant roots, blood splatters everywhere, good good stuff. I must say this reminds me a little bit of Inuyasha, so if you like that, youll like this so much more. The interactions between Kusanagi and Momiji are what you would expect from a tsundere character but the chemistry is good overall. The feel of this anime is very dark and ominous, most scenes are very dull and foggy, giving you that sense of there-is-something-else-going-on. The animation is great, and I am being completely biased here, because most of it is done by hand and I am a sucker for that, but you can also see a very early integration of CGI into anime, which is cool to experience. I have not seen this anime dubbed in any language, so I cant speak for that, but most anime before the mid-2000s are better in original Japanese. If you do not know much about Japanese mythology and culture you might find yourself scratching your head or not understanding the many references they make in the anime, but to those who do know what they are talking about, its a very good take on the legend of Susanoo, Orochi, and the Goddess Amaterasu. Overall, Blue Seed was a great waste of time, a little anime to fill up a void while you are looking for something to watch religiously. The anime is only 26 episodes and there are three 30 minute OVAs, which I still havent seen, but seeing how short this anime is I would recommend giving it a try on a slow weekend, it is not for everyone. All episodes and OVAs can be found on Anilinkz, whereas the manga is a very hard find, so if you really want to find them try Amazon, eBay, or Reddit. 8/10
