Hey Brothers and Sisters....wheres McConaughey? I Pray by the Grace of God I didnt miss the Stoning!!! We speak and sing of Gods Grace with gratitude every Sunday and rightly so. Yet withhold it on Monday because we are too busy condemning others in the name of the one who made grace possible? I get that some parts of his speech came off a bit contradictory or even arrogant. Yes I do recall the Laughton quote and was a bit taken a back at first. However when looked at the whole and in context, it would appear that he did Thank God, called God his hero, and that the quote perhaps meant that if he saw himself as God saw him there would be no room for self condemnation but that by His Grace tomorrow will be new day and can see the same potential God sees in him and have too much respect for that to just throw it away or assume yesterdays failure makes tomorrows hope null and void. He thanks his mom for reinforcing the demand for self respect. No one cannot argue the message that one cannot respect others if they dont respect themselves. Is this not pointed out in the Golden Rule? He then finished with saying he will only chase after himself and no other, knowing he will never attain it. So it seems to me that a man who has just been exalted by the world, stood up and thanked God, admitted the fleeting nature of the moment and by no means the acme of his life or journey to be a better man. He thanked God for showing him the way and blessing him with the gifts and blessings along the way and thanked his mama for the kick in the pants to give him the momentum to get started and affirmed his resolve to only chase the man God longs for him to be and will take joy in the approval of the family who got him started and stayed with him before the fame and glory and will be with him long after all that passes all the while knowing his broken human nature will never reach that perfection , but nonetheless will press on, even in the midst of failure. Sounds a lot like something the apostle Paul once said in Philippians 3:7-14. It could be that he is just a self-aggrandizing egomaniac who like the many like him, in their effort to play humble in order to gain even more accolades , only instead showed how prideful and clueless fame has made them. However, It could also be that he simply spoke his heart and gratitude and sincere faith in a way that wasnt as clear and inadvertently caused confusion or offense for some. Dont worry, he will learn eventually how we proper Christians learn to orate perfectly and always speak our mind without tripping over ourselves and without offending a single person in this world and most certainly not among each-other in the church ;) I dont know. My instinct is that its more the latter than the former and I choose to believe that. I choose to not assume guilt and to not deny another man benefit of doubt. It could be that I am giving him too much grace, if such a thing exist. I have yet to see anything in scripture that offers a specific grace cut off point. Ive seen a whole lot of scripture being thrown around to help justify the many attacks and condemning statements made by my fellow Christians. It is really infuriating to see but mostly just plain heart breaking. Brothers and sisters of the faith, co-bondservants of the Master who redeemed us, my fellow prodigals in the jubilee our Ever-Loving Father commanded in heaven the day we finally came home that continues to this day; Why withhold the Grace we have been given and we ourselves still need every day? Why use scripture to diminish his glory given to God instead of magnifying that glory? Why make sure everyone sees and discusses the devil in his words that may or may not be there and trample even the glimmer of hope that God is indeed with him and take hope others also see and discuss this God he has called attention to....Our God? If you think that my questions are way off and Im just offering falsehood under the guise of Christianity; then my brothers and sisters, if you really do rely on scripture to help guide your actions and to judge the words of man, as well you should, then I encourage you to consider Philippians 1:14-18, before casting that next stone.
