Hey Doc, What can contribute to calf pain after running? Could it - TopicsExpress

Hey Doc, What can contribute to calf pain after running? Could it be an indication of worn out running shoes? HI , While it COULD be contributed to worn out shoes it USUALLY has nothing to do with that. During running our feet impact the ground 1500-2000x per mile and we contract our calfs in order to push off and propel ourselves forward. This can often lead to overuse type calf injuries Such as tears and strains. Running hills can further stress the calfs and aggravate a weaken muscle causing even more problems. Depending on a runners time table for a race goal will often depend on how I recommend managing a calf injury. For instance, if you have a race pending we can use typical sports medicine treatments to accelerate the healing process as opposed to if you have no goal at all enough rest will usually help alleviate most mild calf strains. The important thing is to have it diagnosed accurately. I recently saw a patient that had been diagnosed with a calf strain that was not improving. I knew from my exam it was far worse than a typical calf strain.....the MRI showed the extent of the actual calf tear. We are currently helping her fix this in order to avoid the knife give us a call 858-268-8525 or check out our website for more info sdri.net
