Hey Folks. I was hesitant to post this but I need to. Our fire - TopicsExpress

Hey Folks. I was hesitant to post this but I need to. Our fire department has been flooded with request to burn brush piles, fields, yards and debris piles over the last 2 weeks. Ive counted around 20 requests so far. We certainly would like to help all of our citizens and property owners in our district but we are unable to handle all of these requests. The most common thing we hear is..... Ive got a brush pile for your to train with. Well? With all due respect we do not train on fighting fires with brush piles. Brush piles offer no training opportunities whatsoever. We are a volunteer fire department in which the majority of our members work during the day. Although we answer 100% of our calls 24/7 it requires a volunteer to either take off work or spend their whole Saturday in burning someones brush pile or land. This is not fair to those volunteers who work to protect our community and usually have limited time on the weekends for their families. You can certainly burn your own brush pile or land. If the burn is over ¼ of an acre or near a protected forest you are required to obtain a burn permit from the Alabama Forestry Commission. Here is the bottom line. If the brush pile to too large for your to burn safely then make arrangements to take the brush to the Lauderdale County Landfill. You have break it down into smaller piles if it is safe to do so and burn it. To be quite honest I guess Ill just come right out and say it. If you pile up a brush pile 10 feet high next to your home our property please do not put the burden on your local volunteer fire department to take care of it. Another thing we hear is...well make a donation. Nine times out of ten we never get a donation and the amount we do get does not cover the costs of time spent, fuel, insurance and truck maintenance. Thank you for your understanding. I truly mean this post in the nicest way possible. However............if you are unsure...........PLEASE give us a call and we would be happy to come out and take a look at what you have. Thanks- Morris
