Hey! That Antares rocket that exploded the other day? Heres some interesting information that I was not aware of. The rocket engine on that vehicle is a 30 year old Russian engine. Turns out that while we were developing the massive F-1 engine used on the Saturn V the Russians were instead refining their much smaller existing engines resulting in the most powerful (for their size) and most efficient rocket engines ever produced. When the USSR collapsed they were ordered destroyed but thankfully an enterprising group of Russians hid them away and they were recently rediscovered, refurbished (welds radio-graphed, electronics updated, etc) and purchased by Orbital Sciences Corporation.
