Hey everybody, I just wanted to introduce myself and add a little more context to the current state of the Drew Rugby team and why your donations are so essential to the teams success. This message might be a little long but please read through the whole thing if you can. My name is Kerry Klug, Im a Drew alum from the Class of 2009 and currently the Coordinator of Campus Recreation at Drew. I have the privilege of advising the Mens Rugby team. I wanted to point out two current issues that your donations help remedy. Drew has recently changed their policy regarding student travel that drastically effects the Rugby team. As most of you remember, if there was a game at Bard (10/15/2014), the entire team would fit into as many cars as they could find and drive themselves up to the game. Now, unfortunately, due to a change in our insurance policy, students are not allowed to drive other students to any Drew sponsored/paid for events. If I bought 20 tickets to a Devils game and gave them out to students, Id also have to provide a bus. The NCAA sports, who have more funds and support, always take chartered buses so this doesnt effect them. However, for every Rugby away match we now have to pay for a $500-$700 van or bus to get the boys to the field. As you can imagine, this easily cuts into the small budget that Im allotted to the Rugby team from student activity fees. The field space issue that has existed about as long as the team itself also still remains. I have recently been told that there has been some long term agreement that the rugby teams (men and women combined) can only play 3 home games on the softball outfield. I can tell you right now that for the Fall 2014 there are 5 home games total on the schedule. The team could play on the carriage house field but the referees will often deem it illegal to play on. A long-term dream goal for the team is always to make this field a legal size so we can have a place to say this belongs to Rugby--hands off! We can even name it after a person or class who makes this dream become a reality if you want. So these are just two major reasons why donating to the team is a huge help to the team. And just so there are no reservations, I cannot touch your donations--they all go directly to the team to use for equipment, travel, new kits etc. Between referees, travel, EMTs at the game, game day equipment, paying for student insurance through USA Rugby, med kits at the game and kits/rugby clothing--there isnt a lot to go around for the team. Id like to thank Ralph Sorrentino for helping spread the word about the campaign to help out the Rugby team. If anyone would like to contact me for any reason please dont hesitate for a second. I will listen to any advice on how you would like to help the team succeed or hell, maybe you own a van/bus rental company that would like to give us a discount! Just shoot me an email: [email protected] or call: 973-408-3444.
