Hey, everybody. Your friendly neighborhood Ari here with a little more slacktivism. Lots of people are getting really angry and distraught about the way the justice system has been handling the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Your frustration is beyond justified. Often times, when we advocate against a certain standard or status quo, we isolate ourselves from it. A prime example of this is how the feminist movement is seen in modern media. It was (and still is) focusing on the feminists who completely isolate themselves from men, people who are trans phobic or even homophobic because they know that both of those things can be related to men. Im here to tell you not to do that. Dont act like this issue is exclusively with the justice system and the police department. Its not. We see it everywhere. A common stereotype that almost everyone in our society knows is that in horror movies, the black guy (o the girl first if there is a black man and woman) always dies first. Poor and impoverished neighborhoods are often occupied by a supermajority of black people. This isnt a coincidence. This isnt because they didnt go to school, not because they dont have jobs, not because theyre in gangs. All of those things are products of the community they cant leave. Its our job as people who truly want to see equality to see that this racism is rooted in our lives. It exists, it is right around the corner from our houses, and its not a gun, or the police department, or the justice system. Embrace it and fight it. Dont separate yourselves. If you do, you limit all possibility for all education and cooperation with people with differing opinions.
