Hey everyone Wanted to share something that upset me the other day. We went to a community pool on Monday. In order to swim in the deeper end one must first pass a swimming test. I asked Aniyah if shed like to swim in the deeper end and she said yes. I explained to her she would have to take a test first. Mind you all Aniyah is an AWESOME swimmer, shes a little fish. She has been swimming for many years now with no issues at all. I took her over to the lifeguard and let them know shed like to take the test. He told her ok, you have to start here and swim all the way over there, freehand. It was a pretty long distance but no biggie for Aniyah. He told her you cant stop and you cant grab onto the wall. Again it has to be freehand so right arm, left arm, right arm over the head. I explained to him that she is paralyzed in her right arm and cant do it like that but that she is an amazing swimmer. Right then and there he stopped me. He said im sorry she has to be able to swim free hand or wont get a wristband to swim in the deep end. I told him how ridiculous that was because it just wasnt something she could do. I told him to give her a chance and just see how good her swimming was. He said fine and let her do the test. She did GREAT!! once you swim to the end you have to tread water for 30 seconds. She did all of that. Then he looks at me and says sorry, i just cant give her a wristband because she couldnt put her right arm over her head. By now im frustrated. Obviously shes a great swimmer. I asked to speak to the manager so he pointed me and his direction. After speaking to the manager about her situation he gave her a wristband. I fully understand that there are rules for swimming in the deep end for safety reasons, but denying her before they even see how great of a swimmer she is pisses me off. Honestly.. she can swim better than half the people I seen taking the test. In the end she got her wristband and proved them wrong and for that i am happy. GO ANIYAH!
