Hey everyone, for those of you who dont know, Ive been working on - TopicsExpress

Hey everyone, for those of you who dont know, Ive been working on an update to the ePrint quota system along with two other peers (Leah Catotti and FS Khan). Tomorrow evening we are presenting at the DSG meeting. There will also be a Chronicle article coming out in the next few days. The main ideas of the proposal are updating the cost of printing to a more realistic number ($.04/sheet) and implementing a reasonable hard cap per semester (1000 sheets/semester). Any printing over this hard cap would be charged to flex. This hard cap was specifically chosen such that the vast majority of students (~80%) will not be impacted at all with existing behaviors. We are mainly looking for behavior changes and the reduction of wasteful printing. Weve looked into the distribution of printing by school and major and havent found any evidence to support the idea that different majors would be disproportionately affected. Making paper is a very dirty process (about 6.5 lb of carbon emissions per ream during the production of paper, that converts to about 1.3 lb of carbon for each pound of paper). We see this update aligning with Dukes goal of carbon neutrality by 2024 and our Climate Action Plan. Even under the new system, Duke will still have the lowest cost of printing and one of the highest quotas out of any school in the US News top 10. If you have any questions, feel free to comment here (others probably have the same one) or message us. We would like to ask you all to try to steer conversations in a positive direction if the topic arises with you and your friends. You all are also invited to come to the meeting tomorrow in Schiciano Auditorium in CIEMAS at 8 pm. Thanks in advance!
