Hey facebook, So Rebecca nominated me for a slightly modified version of the ALS ice bucket challenge which basically I am taking as a chance to promote something I really care about. Essentially, the ice bucket challenge is about making yourself feel uncomfortable for the greater good. Well, in my opinion there is no better way to make myself feel uncomfortable than to publicly recognize my white privilege in todays society, and explain that unless I am actively working every day to push back against it, then I am just perpetuating the institutionalized, systemic racism that is so rampant today, despite what some post racial society enthusiasts might try to tell you. And Im going to go one step further and encourage all my white privileged friends to also recognize that the system has always and will always benefit them unless they do something to actively fight back against it. So, Im not nominating anyone but I am strongly encouraging you to nominate yourself. This is why I will be donating to blackgirldangerous, one of my favourite places for education on how I can use my privilege the most effectively.
