Hey guys Sir James here, So theres trade rumors starting to buzz about The #Angels looking to move Mark Trumbo. I personally am not in favor of this, hes young, has mammoth Power, Former All-Star, and very Easy on the Wallet. Thats not all, lets get into this a bit deeper shale we? The Angels power supply is skin deep at best. The only guy on the club with a SLG north of .500 is Trout. The only reason Kendrick and Bourjos (who is not even on the field) have SLG above .450 is due to career seasons –– no guarantee that this is repeatable. Pujols is only getting older, and Hamilton is a massive question mark. The minute this team trades Trumbo, it suddenly has a power problem. Then you have the front office scrambling around trying to solve the “power problem” for the next 2-3 years, leading them to make the shortsighted moves (eg, Wells, Matsui). We are getting good value from Trumbo at a time when there is a relative power deficit in the MLB – but Trumbo doesn’t have the slash line to return elite starting pitching prospects, which is what the team needs (not more bullpen pieces). Trumbo is a keeper right now. Once more Trumbo plays the field as a firstbaseman and corner OF. Reducing him to a DH stuffs straw into the argument. The league average bullpen ERA is 3.66 (3.77 FIP/3.89 xFIP). For 2013, the Angels’ bullpen puts up a 3.86 mark (3.63 FIP/3.94 xFIP). The ‘true talent’ metrics (FWIW) already peg the BP as league average on the season. BUT: Here’s the ERA of the Angels’ relief corp by month this year: March/April: 4.26 ERA May: 3.97 ERA June: 3.50 ERA July: 3.26 ERA ERA is only one very incomplete metric (I use WAR below if you prefer it), but the tendency is clear and significant. The bullpen is markedly improved, and it’s well above average now. And replacements are already on the way, even beyond Burnett (and Vargas, who may move Williams back to the pen). Let’s focus on SP and preserve what power we have.
