“Hey, look out!” Sarah whipped her head toward the warning, - TopicsExpress

“Hey, look out!” Sarah whipped her head toward the warning, and her heart leapt up to her throat at the sight of a runaway horse charging toward her. She jumped back as it ran straight at her and flew past so close she could feel the heat of the creature’s body. Arms flailing, she fell backwards, landing in the muck with a splat. “Ah!” Her dress! She lifted her hands, now caked with mud and who knew what else. Behind her, laughter echoed across the depot’s platform. Never had she been so humiliated. A man on horseback rode toward her at a fast trot. This time, she wouldn’t refuse assistance. He slowed the horse and gazed down, his brown eyes showing an odd mix of concern and amusement. Was he laughing at her, too? “You all right, lady?” She closed her eyes. “Do I look all right?” “You’re not hurt, ma’am?” “Only so far as the pain of humiliation.” “Good.” He nudged his horse in the side. “Then I’ll go catch my stallion. He’s real valuable.” “Catch your stallion? Of all the….” Sarah stared at the man, her mouth wide open. A fly buzzed dangerously close, so she snapped her lips together, then watched the man chase after his precious horse. She flung the mud from her hands. Never had she encountered a more insensitive brute. Excerpt from Whispers on the Prairie, book 1 in the Pioneer Promises series by Vickie McDonough.
