Hey there fellow CDFA. Good morning & happy new year! :) I hope you are all enjoying the first weekend of 2015. I certainly am loving it so far. Ive been seeing a lot of posts in here more recently, with people asking questions about headshots, where to get started, advancing in careers, and all those fun sort of things. While I do not have a magic anecdote, as nobody does, I would like to offer an idea. Something that I love to do, in between auditioning & booking roles, is to create my own projects. Theres so many reasons for it, besides the fact that its fun (if you are doing it for the right reasons). I think its a great way to learn what your branding is.. thats such a dirty dirty word to us actors. You grow up in the theatre, you learn Shakespeare, you learn Stanislavski, and what? But all it is really is just being very very honest about what you look like, what your strengths are, and what your weaknesses are (in my opinion anyway). Its that simple. What better way to figure that out, then (*a?) to create your own projects? Its such a lovely way to find your voice. Another great reason is you can meet & get to know other fellow creative & inspired individuals like yourself. Through being on set for a day or for several hours, you really find who you mesh with.. you learn how to better relate to the various personalities.. because thats another great lesson to learn as well. Everybody has a unique perspective on their art/craft. True artists are passionate & inspired, yes, AND we each have our own method of madness that we feel works best for expressing our creativity. Everybody has quirks & buttons - theres nothing right or wrong about that. But what better way to figure out what yours are, what others are, and how to best combine them than to spend time working together on something? The last reason I will mention in this book of a post, is that you get material for your reel! Yay!! :) Now that is a win/win for EVERYBODY. You know what they say - Practice makes perfect (PS. Who is this mysterious they & how do they always know stuff? LOL) So if I may offer a piece of advice, food for thought, something for you to take with a grain of salt.. it would be to create your own work in between the work work. :) Heres some creations Ive been up to, if you are curious: Facebook Fran (short comedy sketch) youtu.be/DxVHjXVkUSE Weekly Random (late-night style talk show) youtu.be/TghG2RnAFNU?list=PL6YHNnH3euIs8cPEGWuDZqFoRRlHRXxPf If you are in the LA area, and this inspires you to possibly collaborate with me, please let me know! :)
