“He’s your ex, why should you care?” This is a question that a lot of you are probably thinking, and that my boss with no couth had asked me last week. It’s a valid question, I suppose. Why should I care? We were married for 18 years before we separated, then divorced a few years ago. I remarried last year. Reason for our separation and divorce need not be explained. If you know us well enough, you already know why. But why should I care? Truth is, he and I still love each other. We love the 2 beautiful, intelligent, strong-willed children we brought into the world. We love the memories we had on Martin Street, hanging with the neighbors till 2 A.M. on summer nights, every single bike race party we threw, every sleepover we had with the cousins and neighbors as they camped out tightly on our living room floor. We love looking back and thinking about our time spend at St. Mary’s Parish in Manayunk, every Santa Claus and Easter Bunny breakfast, every Bingo night, every Sunday morning mass followed by a trip to the crik to feed the geese, and every Christmas assembling toys after the children finally fell asleep, getting an hour’s sleep before they woke us up to see what Santa brought them. I see him as a person before I see him as my ex; a human being with feelings. I have a conscience. What kind of message would I be sending my children if I didn’t help with the scariest and most vulnerable time of his life? What kind of human being would I be? What kind of person would my husband be if he demanded that I not cater to him? What kind of world would we live in if we all thought it wasn’t our “job” to take care of other human beings? I hope that if I’m ever in Mike’s situation, those around me don’t put a label on me. I hope they see me as a person in need and they reach out wholeheartedly and willingly to help prepare me for the inevitable so my final days are peaceful, not full of bitterness.
