Hi All: I am putting out an appeal to everyone I know. Some of you may or may not know my friend Helen Nesbitt. You also may or may not know that her son John has ALS ( Lou Gehrig’s disease). I’ve been trying to come up with some way to help them out. While there is not much I can do about the emotional devastation, I can’t sit around and watch her become financially devastated as well without at least trying to help. She is a very proud and independent person and finds it very difficult to admit that she needs help. This is the situation: John’s dad died of ALS approx 15 years ago. John, who is 27, started having symptoms in May 2012 (loss of voice). In late 2012, he started falling and having trouble walking. He was diagnosed in January of this year. He is now in a wheelchair, but still has use of his upper body right now. He is living with Helen, and there is no other family support. She is now being faced with the decision of either having to leave her job, or try to hire someone full time to be with him. It is my goal to get 50 to 75 people to contribute $20 per month for the next 6 months or so, just to try to help keep her head above water, pay COBRA premiums for him, make handicap adjustments to car and house and other things that insurance won’t pay for. I was going to set up a Trust account, but quickly found out that there are legal expenses involved and it can take quite a bit of time to set it up with a tax id number etc.. Instead I have set up a checking account in her name at Sun Trust bank that I am contributing to. If you are able to help, a check can be made out to her and sent to my home and I will deposit in her account. If you can even make a small one time contribution, it will be greatly appreciated. I can only give you my word, that it will be spent wisely and for the intended purpose of helping her to get through this time. If you need to verify that this came from me, just call me or email me. I really hate asking for money, and I don’t want anyone to think there will be hard feelings if you are unable to give, but I hope you understand why I feel I have to do this.
