Hi All, I just wanted to share some news about an amazing freediver rescue that’s personal to me. I recently found out about one of my freediving students surviving a very bad deep water blackout, all thanks to the incredible efforts of his dive buddy, Bob. After having recovered him from the bottom his buddy Bob performed well over 20 minutes of CPR in the water by himself while also trying to swim back to the boat. Then he had to get him into the boat, dial 000 all the while trying not to stop resuscitation. He finally got a response before emergency got there. So to Bob Manning, a very sincere thank you for saving my friends life. The News clip shown, was cut to 30 seconds and totally excluded just how difficult the circumstances really were…….. Doing in water CPR by yourself is extremely difficult to say the least. Bob had somehow improvised and placed one arm under him and hand in the middle of his back with the other on the chest to make the compressions work, then shifting position for the breaths. He had luckily taken a St Johns 1st Aid course just days before, but they definitely don’t teach you how do that ! With the effort of doing CPR and trying to swim back I’m amazed how he did it. Even with the shock and part of him feeling his buddy may be dead he never gave up. The 2 were scouting an area for fish and got separated for a moment. When Bob found him unconscious, Bob had to recover him from the bottom, my friend had most likely blacked out minutes before. At one stage during the 20 – 30 minutes of CPR, pink frothy liquid was expelled indicating salt water had entered the lungs. So after being revived and without any signs of brain damage this is one remarkable rescue! Bob is 63 years of age and has overcome cancer in the past 18months but is now back to diving like a 30yo.
