Hi Anglers Just got back from Lake Arrowhead guiding my friend Dan Perlmutter. This is the reason why learning to read the electronics and what the environment is telling you. When you are at a different lake the weather and water temperature is changing as we get into fall fishing. The last time I was here about a month ago the thermocline was at 15 ft and the water temp was 69-71 degrees and we killed them on Yamamoto Shad Shape Worm using a 1/16 oz jig head wacky style. I knew that technique would not work this time out. You ask me why? This is why it is important to interpret what your sonar is telling you, it not only saves you a lot time fishing where you were fishing a month ago and you are not getting bit. The sonar was telling me there were 2 thermoclines and this happens when a lake is turning over, one at 20ft and the other at 40ft. The 20 ft thermocline was the cooler water turning over and I knew the trout were going to bite really good, this another story that I hate talking but I will tell you the story next time, how you can finess troll light line for trout rather than use lead core and rod cod gear. The 40ft thermocline was the natural environment and that is where the bass were. We had a low pressure system the first day and then a high pressure the 2nd day so I went to long lining a 3/16 oz Top Brass Pro Jo instead of a 1/8 oz, pegging the bead with a Top Brass Bead Peg It 3 ft leader using a #2 Owner Wacky Hook. Because there is a lot of deep Crappie in Lake Arrowhead I brought up my color #117 Lil Slugger that looks just like a Crappie. Using the trolling motor moving real slow, we dragged the bait in 40ft of water and we proceeded to slay the bass. It was an afternoon bite from 4-6 pm non-stop. I am always trying to help you guys and give you insight on how to prepare yourself to fish fall and winter conditions using your sonar to save you a lot of time and guessing. Tight Line and God Bless Don Iovino
