Essar Chester Round the Walls Race Although weather and walls conditions have caused many variations to its route, the Boxing Day running of this race has remained a constant event in Chester since its inception in 1972. The standard route is between 4.5 and 5 miles, starting on the Roodee racecourse and following almost the full 2-mile length of the Roman and Medieval walls, to finish back on the racecourse. However, the route has been altered on various occasions due to cold weather. An overnight frost once again necessitated a switch to the Roodee in 2013. The race was ran over four laps of the Roodee covering approx. 3.5 miles across a good smattering of mud with the odd frozen puddle thrown in for good measure! Fourteen runners from EPRC joined the crowds in various state of fancy dress including an Elf, Mrs Claus and Sumo. Leading the club home was Julian Tegg, 23:50, who came in one second ahead of Andy Blair 23:51. They were closely followed by Paul Price (24:12), Mike Burns dressed as a Sumo crossed the line in 24:28 and Dave Roberts 25:10 Paul Plested, Graeme Blair & Rebecca Curran all crossed the line in dead heat (25:44), with Rebecca being the first lady of EPRC to cross the line. A further trio of Alison MacDonald (26:03), dressed as Mrs Claus, David Burgham (26:05) and Sharon Plested (26:17) all crossed the line within 14 seconds of each other. Brian Griffiths (27:21), Robert Shanahan (27:52) and Laura Blundell (35:38) completed the EPRC pack EPRC Christmas Handicap – Saturday 29th December 2013 In all 30 EPRC members took part in the Christmas Handicap held on Saturday 28th December. Some wore the traditional golden vests whilst others dressed in various costumes including Santa, Elf, and morph suits, which left little to the imagination! As always everyone had a good laugh, which is the cornerstone of the club The timings for the handicap are based on a runner’s previous times, with runners starting over a nineteen minute timeframe; therefore anyone can win the race.
